Founded in 1933 and headquartered in New Orleans, Canal Barge Company, Inc. is one of the largest privately-owned, independent marine transportation companies in the United States. The Canal Barge Company family of companies consists of Canal Barge Company, Inc. (CBC); Canal Terminal Company (CTC) and Pelican Marine Services, divisions of Canal Barge Company; and Illinois Marine Towing (IMT), a wholly owned subsidiary.  Our fleet of 49 towboats and 900+ barges operates throughout the Inland Waterways System of the United States. In addition, our oceangoing deck barge fleet routinely operates in all offshore waters of the Gulf of Mexico, on the Eastern Seaboard and West Coast, and internationally in Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, Central, and South America, and, on occasion, Europe, Asia and West Africa.

 Understanding customer requirements and bringing customized logistical solutions, CBC has a successful track record of developing long-term and mutually profitable partnerships with major companies in the refining, petrochemical, power generation, oilfield service, construction, materials, and space industries. With our tank barges, we transport liquid cargoes such as lube oils, petrochemicals, and feedstocks. We move products such as petroleum coke, coal, and crushed stone with our hoppers and specialty oversized cargo from breakbulk cargo to NASA rocketry components with our deck barges.   

Over the past two decades, the company has steadily increased its presence in the Chicagoland area. Canal Terminal Company, a division of CBC, is a state-of-the-art, multi-modal liquid storage terminal in the Chicago area, specializing in the handling of a variety of heated cargos, such as asphalt, black oils, and sulfur, and clean products including several specialty chemicals. In addition, Canal Analytical & Environmental Services is a full-service laboratory on the CTC premises. Illinois Marine Towing boasts the largest fleet of harbor and towing vessels serving Channahon to South Chicago and is the leading harbor service provider in the Chicago area. IMT also possesses a quick-repair shipyard, a dry cargo terminal, liquid and dry cargo barge cleaning, barge readiness services and crewing services capabilities.
