Warren Easton Senior High School JobShadows at Mpress
Students from Warren Easton Senior High School boarded a bus bound for work-readiness on Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008. The students from Ms. McLendon and Ms. Robert's class visited Mpress to learn about jobs available in the printing industry as well as the education, skills and attitude they will need to succeed. JAGNO board member and owner of Mpress, Ash Abbott began the day's activities by introducing himself, Mpress and the printing industry. Students who were wondering how one goes from being an unsure 17 year old kid to the owner of an $8 million dollar a year company learned from Ash that it takes hard work and passion. Students also learned about how all printing results from combining the three primary colors: cyan, magenta and yellow, and afterwards, they were given a color blindness test. Following Ash's introductory activities, students went on a tour of the printing press seeing printing machines that were as big as their classroom and bigger! Students also saw embossing machines, industrial paper cutters, massive mail sorting machines - in two words, Cool Stuff! After the tour, students broke into small groups to shadow Mpress employees and learn in-depth skills about a particular function of a printing press.
According to Ms. McLendon, "The students found the job shadow experience to be educational as well as rewarding. This event allowed our students to partake of a unique experience that transcended their classroom walls into a real workplace setting. After returning, I heard some of the students tell other students what a treat it was to be able to participate in such an event."
